Jon Sibal BMW M1 PROCAR Concept

m1 pro car

From artist Jon Sibal comes a fantastic concept based off the BMW M1 Homage Concept Car that was revealed back in 2008. With styling cues that can kill the unprepared as well as the interesting use of such a huge wing, I do believe Sibal makes the original Homage car look COMPLETELY boring with this new rendition. Below is his detailed story of how he went about designing the BMW M1 PROCAR Concept.

Jon Sibal BMW M1 PROCAR Concept

Jon Sibal Explains

“As a BMW fanatic, I was excited when BMW Group Design unveiled the design study M1 Hommage Concept Car at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2008 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the legendary M1 by Giugiaro. My first thoughts were “Oh cool, what about the ProCar?”

“Seeing an original M1 dressed in a ProCar body kit in person, I knew a race version of the new M1 could be a very interesting idea. Needless to say, BMW is due for a supercar of their own to compete with the likes of Audi’s R8, Mercedes Benz’s SLR 722, Porsche CGT, Lexus LF-A etc.”

“So I got working on a full rendering on how an M1 Hommage ProCar might look like if it were ever produced.”

The Design Process - Rebirth of an Icon

“I began the process by studying the different angles of the M1 Concept Car to get a feel for the lines, shapes and curvature of the body. And with any BMW concept car, the design and contours are all new which required a ProCar body kit that suits these lines properly. The “flamed surface” is very evident so to properly convert this M1 to the ProCar, all of these design elements needed to be considered. I sketched out a new wide body kit design making sure that it stays true to the BMW design language by continuing the new lines of the concept car. The front fascia was also modified and given the updated ProCar look. So with Photoshop CS, the new design was applied and rendered. The BMW M1 ProCar is basically a raced-out version of the original street M1 so the addition of the race rear wing was important to complete the conversion along with new super deep dish wheels.”

“Regardless of the accuracy of my speculation to the actual BMW Group Design Team’s design, it will just be awesome to see the M1 ProCar tearing up it up in the ‘ring.”

Fuel to the fire
“The day right before I finished the M1 ProCar rendering, BMW announced the BMW M1 Procar revival at Hockenheim.”

BMW Concept Scribble Video - Is This The New 5-Series GT?

BMW Concept Scribble Video - Is This The New 5-Series GT?

This makes you start to really think how BMW designs their cars. Why do they use those silly round headlights with halos around them? Why do they have well balanced vehicles with rear wheel drive? What if they had to design a car to “appeal” to certain customers or circumstances? Hmm, what if.

This new BMW video draws speculation of the upcoming BMW V5 PAS (BMW 5-Series GT Concept). From the subtle suggestions of new features being transferred to a “car” with more legroom, truck room and headroom complete with a panoramic roof. New storage area features that are revolutionary and “ingenious”… that’s what it is all about.

BMW Concept Scribble Video - Is This The New 5-Series GT?

Below we have included the first video of a series presenting a revolutionary concept by BMW. Innovative space concepts, premium comfort. It is not a sedan, no SUV and no station-wagon, but 100% BMW.

BMW Concept Scribble Video - Is This The New 5-Series GT?

We thought this was interesting enough to post leading up to the silly Superbowl Commercials this weekend. At least they didn’t pay millions of dollars to air this one. Thank God! Enjoy!

2008 BMW X1 Concept

BMW X1 Concept

Once again the successful history of BMW X models is opening up the door for further inspiration in the development of innovative vehicle concepts: The BMW X1 Concept offers all the thrill of agile and versatile mobility also beyond the beaten track in a new segment of vehicles.

Proudly presenting this new Concept Car, BMW is offering an outlook at the world's first Sports Activity Vehicle in the premium compact segment. Through its design alone, this new concept model clearly expresses all the strengths and qualities of such a vehicle, the BMW X1 Concept exuding a strong touch of agility and versatility both in its driving qualities and practical use. And at the same time the Concept Car clearly reveals the stylish elegance of this five-door as well as its modern function.

Creating this unique Concept Car, BMW is catering for the demands of a modern target group in search of an up-to-date automobile meeting both the challenges of everyday traffic and the personal needs of many purchasers for an active lifestyle and a versatile driving experience. The BMW X1 Concept expresses that very special sheer driving pleasure so typical in this unique form of a BMW X model combined with a high standard of all-round functionality. So now these qualities are for the first time being carried over to a vehicle in the premium compact segment.

Ongoing innovation in the Sports Activity segment established by BMW.

As the founder of the Sports Activity Vehicle segment, BMW has already proven its outstanding competence in developing innovative vehicle concepts. Indeed, the German premium car maker first established its position as the leader in innovation in this segment - a position BMW still holds today - in 1999 through the presentation of the first-generation BMW X5.

In a market segment previously dominated by conventional offroaders, the BMW X5, through its outstanding dynamic driving qualities alone, set new standards right from the beginning.

Now in its second generation, the BMW X5, through its superior driving qualities and wide range of practical use as well as its luxurious interior ambience, still sets the standard for vehicles in its category to this very day.

The exceptional potential offered by this new segment of vehicles also enabled BMW at a very early point to carry over the attractive features of this Sports Activity Vehicle to other market segments. In the guise of the BMW X3, for example, outstanding agility on all kinds of terrain also proved to be a huge success in the segment below the BMW X5. Indeed, the BMW X3 was the first and for many years the only vehicle in this segment to come from a premium manufacturer, with worldwide sales of the BMW X3 now amounting to more than 500,000 units.

The ongoing expansion of the BMW X model range is likewise the result of the unique, innovative power offered by the world's most successful manufacturer of premium cars. The BMW X6 launched this year, for example, is the world's first Sports Activity Coupé to successfully enter the market.

This unique model combining the dynamic lines of a Coupé with the superior power and cultivated robustness of a BMW X model, continues the emphasis on dynamic driving qualities originally initiated with the BMW X5, maintaining BMW's philosophy most clearly and convincingly. Indeed, BMW has once again, through the BMW X6, set the foundation for a brand-new type of vehicle reaching additional target groups now once again thrilled by the BMW X model concept accounting in the meantime for sales of more than 1.2 million units the world over.

BMW X models: unique concept, superior technology, outstanding quality.

The global success and great appeal of BMW's X models results not only from the precise and target group-oriented development of this vehicle concept, but also from the implementation of typical BMW features in this category. Hence, the particular thrill and unique style of every BMW X model forms a perfect match with uncompromising premium quality.

The unique driving characteristics of a BMW X model result not just from the concept, but also from BMW's worldwide leadership in the area of drive systems. And last but certainly not least in this context, the huge innovative power of the BMW Group comes out clearly also in the equipment and features of BMW's X models featuring superior suspension technology and driver assistance systems as well as a supreme standard of safety and comfort.

Yet another essential factor is that every BMW X model combines this exclusive range of qualities with a level of efficiency quite unparalleled in the respective segment: In their balance of performance and fuel consumption, BMW's X models achieve a standard generally far superior to comparable models built by the competition.

Again last but definitely not least, the modern and up-to-date character of BMW's X models comes out clearly through their stable value, non-partisan market studies regularly confirming the lasting value of the BMW X5 and the BMW X3 as pre-owned cars.

All this sets the foundation for BMW's entry into another market segment where the BMW X1 Concept already reveals the perspectives involved. The Compact Car clearly shows which features are to be expected of a BMW X model in the segment of premium compact vehicles. Through its de - sign alone, the new model clearly belongs to the range of BMW X vehicles - while at the same time it offers all these features in truly individual style representing the design language so typical of BMW.

The Concept Car clearly confirms BMW's claim to offer maximum driving pleasure and efficiency, versatility and functionality, as well as safety, comfort and quality also in the premium compact segment. And with all these factors already being largely considered and taken into account in the BMW X1 Concept, it is fair to say that an appropriate production model will see the light of day within just one year.

The BMW X1: authentic transition of the BMW X model concept into a new vehicle segment.

In its design and driving characteristics, every BMW X model bears out the unmistakable DNA of this kind of vehicle, at the same time showing an individual rendition of the brand and the features typical of the concept. This clearly ensures the authentic transition of the brand values and characteristic features of a BMW X model into each market segment.

The BMW X1 Concept naturally lives up to this demanding standard and claim, the Concept Car clearly standing out as a BMW X model from every angle, despite its body dimensions smaller than a BMW X6, a BMW X5, and a BMW X3. At the same time the design of the new car establishes typical BMW features again reflecting the specific characteristics of the premium compact segment and generating new momentum in the appreciation and perception of vehicles in this class.

Introducing the BMW X1 Concept, BMW is taking on the leading role also in the premium compact class. For the first time the characteristics of a Sports Activity Vehicle are being carried over authentically into this market segment, creating the concept of a vehicle which, in an urban environment, ensures the highest conceivable level of freedom and spontaneous activity.

Indeed, the BMW X1 Concept presents mobility options never seen before in this segment. The new model offers versatility and agility in a compact rendition, thus providing a very appropriate interpretation of the sheer driving pleasure so typical of a BMW X model in our current day and age.

Measuring 4,457 millimetres or 175.5" in length, the BMW X1 Concept is 108 millimetres or almost 4.3" shorter than the BMW X3. The wheelbase of the BMW X1 Concept, in turn, measures 2,760 mm or 104.4".

Through its proportions and four doors together with a large tailgate, the Concept Car hints towards a very generous feeling and experience of space. In addition, the clear design and shape of the vehicle bears testimony to a high level of function meeting all the driver's and passengers' requirements in everyday traffic. And last but not least, the BMW X1 Concept combines all these features with the self-confident elegance so typical of a premium vehicle. Through these qualities alone, therefore, the BMW X1 Concept is destined to become the trendsetter for a modern style of urban mobility clearly pointing into the future.

Front-end design: dynamic lines, characteristic emphasis on width.

The sculptural lines of the new model make the BMW X1 Concept a truly exceptional highlight in the premium compact segment with all the features and qualities of a BMW X model. The front end, the side and rear merge smoothly into one another, their various surfaces forming one whole and striking lines creating a smooth and flowing link between the individual elements of the body.

Design features typical of the brand additionally emphasise the unmistakable look and impact of the vehicle, the upright BMW kidney grille, dual round headlights cut off at the top, the large, almost square wheel cutouts, the black band stretching around the lower section of the vehicle, the distinctive contour line along the side and the horizontal lines at the rear again clearly confirming that this concept car is a genuine X model from BMW.

The powerful stature of a BMW X model comes out clearly in new design at the front end of the BMW X1 Concept. The DNA typical of BMW X is also to be found in the strikingly contoured engine compartment lid and the structure of the upright BMW kidney grille with its extra-wide bars positioned far apart from one another at the outside on the BMW X1 Concept, thus symbolising the robust nature of the vehicle.

Through their sharply cut "eyelids", the dual round headlights so typical of BMW offer a clear view and focus, white-coloured horizontal covers at the top enhancing this effect to an even higher standard.

Innovative surface design highlighting the vehicle's striking features.

Yet another innovative design feature is the three-dimensional surrounds on the headlights. This particular design element to be admired on the BMW X1 Concept and reflected by the surrounds on the headlights and the side window graphics highlights the superior technical character of the headlight units with their clear glass look in a very convincing manner. Again reflecting the typical style of a BMW X model, the foglamps are positioned far to the outside, just above the air intake scoop.

The robust character of the BMW X1 Concept is further emphasised by the car's underfloor protection. This protection unit bearing clear reference to the use of the vehicle off the beaten track, takes on a particularly sophisticated and elegant style through its silver paintwork - and at the same time the front frame around this protection element forms the lower surround on the air intake.

Together with another silver crossbar extending across the entire width of the air intake, this forms two contrasting horizontal lines giving the vehicle an even more powerful and wider look.

The surface design of the powerfully contoured engine lid is characterised by six striking contour lines moving towards one another in a V-shape at the front of the vehicle. The two inner lines lead to the BMW kidney grille where they almost meet one another, while the two outer contour lines extend in the opposite direction from the front end of the engine compartment lid all the way to the side section of the vehicle where they continue into the shoulder lines extending all the way to the back. Again, this particular flow of lines emphasises the sculptural design of the BMW X1 Concept connecting all body elements with one another.

Side view: an especially sleek look combined with the features typical of a BMW X model.

Both the unmistakable proportions of the BMW X1 Concept and the newly interpreted features of a BMW X model come out clearly at the side of the car. The silhouette of this compact five-door is particularly sleek and stretchedout, giving the entire vehicle a very sporting and agile look. And at the same time the raked tailgate adds a coupé-like appearance.

With its short front body overhang, the waistline slightly lower around the A-pillars, the large wheel arches with their almost square contours and the black plastic protection panels on the lower level of the body, the BMW X1 Concept comes with all the typical features of a BMW X model also from the side.

Another characteristic highlight is the visibly low centre of gravity bearing clear reference on the BMW X models to the harmonious interaction of the front and rear wheels in conveying the power of the engine to the road. On the BMW X1 Concept this connection is further highlighted by a crease line on the lower edge of the plastic frame running along the entire length of the sidesills finished in silver. The dynamic, powerful surface modelling of this element provides an attractive interplay of light and shade, again accentuating - like the strong, sturdy and sophisticated underfloor protection front and rear - the refined but robust nature of this new Concept Car.

The surrounds on the side windows come in a particularly elegant threedimensional look taking up the design language already to be admired on the headlights and rear lights. Again, this expresses the dynamic contours of the window graphics including the contour-swing at the bottom of the D-pillars well known as the "Hofmeister kick".

Striking flow of lines with that characteristic sweep.

The BMW X1 Concept offers a highly attractive interplay of concave and convex surfaces between the characteristic lines to be admired at the side. The interaction of light and shade created in this way gives the entire vehicle a powerful and agile look, the shoulder line extending out of the engine compartment lid and flowing along the side of the car emphasising its dynamic character.

The lower character line, as it is called, running parallel to the side-sills, creates a unique, exceptional touch in the side view of the BMW X1 Concept. This character line starts around the direction indicator at the side, initially moving down slightly and then striving upwards first quite moderately and then with increasing dynamism before tapering out in the rear door. In its sweeping flow of power, the character line ends exactly at the window surround on the window graphics with its "Hofmeister kick", thus creating the impression of one complete contour extending over the entire side view of the vehicle.

The flow of this character line first rising up moderately and then in an increasingly dynamic process offers a particular highlight in design also reflected on the engine compartment lid, on the contours around the rear lights and the lines on the side mirrors, and thus adding yet another striking touch to the BMW X1 Concept. Both the robust character and the variable functionality of the BMW X1 Concept are highlighted by the strong and sturdy roof railing extending far back to the rear and ending in the air flow spoiler. Finished in Liquid Silver, the roof railing is indeed yet another feature emphasising the refined look and premium character of the entire vehicle.

The BMW X1 Concept comes on 19-inch light-alloy rims in high-quality innovative ten-spoke design again characteristic of BMW's X models. The newly designed, twin-colour wheels add a special touch of urban sportiness and agility in particularly elegant style. The narrow spokes on the rims, in turn, are twisted slightly to the outside, while the rim bars are cut off at the front, proudly presenting the bright silver colour of polished aluminium. The side flanks and the rim hump, finally, are finished in Dark Grey to provide a particularly sporting contrast.

Striking rear view with innovative lights technology.

Like the front view, the rear view of the BMW X1 Concept is again characterised by the underfloor protection finished in silver. The rear frame of the broad protection element creates a contrasting colour highlight also at this point, again emphasising the impressive width of the vehicle.

In their design, the rear lights combine those unique shapes so typical of BMW and truly innovative technology. The light clusters come with BMW's characteristic L-contours proudly boasting their typical shape also at night. This unique night design is further highlighted by BMW's innovative technology, with consistently fluorescent, red-glowing rows of lights fed by LED light units serving as the light source. The result is a genuinely homogeneous flow of light with a powerful signalling effect on energy consumption significantly lower than with conventional lights.

Here again, the rear frame of the extra-wide protective element adds an attractive position of the rear light clusters moved far to the outside into the rear side panels. The rows of lights formed by fluorescent tubes continues all round into the side of the vehicle where the lights move up slightly, thus emphasising the L-shaped contours of the light clusters even more distinctly. Again, this three-dimensional look contributes to the characteristic night design of the BMW X1 Concept.

Last but certainly not least, the paintwork on the BMW X1 Concept emphasises the innovative, modern and sophisticated character of the vehicle, the new Meridian Gold Metallic paintwork colour accentuating the youthful and dynamic look of the Concept Car. Indeed, this strong golden-yellow finish is truly fascinating both in the glow of headlights from other vehicles and in the bright sunshine, creating a highly effective play of light and adding additional momentum to the artistically chiselled surfaces of the BMW X1 Concept.

BMW M1 concept

The photos on this page show a new copper-colored BMW M1 concept, the photos were snapped up first from Asphalte.ch and these are the same people that gave us a sneak peak at the Lamborghini LP560-4 earlier in 2008. These photos were of the BMW M1 concept at Villa d'Este; they show the super car on its own and with its forebears.

As you can see, the BMW M1 concept has a flowing, smooth design with "a low brow, high haunches and the signature kidney grille". The M1 is part of Bimmer's 30th anniversary celebration of Munich's original classic supercar, while these photos are from a private exhibition that took place today, we should be hearing more news within the next 24 hours when an official Press Release becomes available. BMW Wont Build The CS Sport Sedan

The car that was supposed to offer BMW a worthy rival to the Mercedes-Benz CLS, Porsche Panamera and Maserati Quattroporte sports sedans, the production version of last year's CS Concept has fallen victim to the economic downturn and will not be produced after all. The announcement was made during a conference call on the Bavarian automaker's third quarter report. "The sharper focus on profitability will result, amongst other things, in product decisions being revisited. As a result, the BMW Group will no longer produce a series version of the Concept CS since this vehicle does not meet the internal requirements for rates of return," said BMW in a statement.

Fortunately, other future products of the BMW Group will not be affected by the firm's cost cutting strategy. This means that the launch of the production versions of the BMW Concept X1 SUV, BMW Concept 7 Series Active Hybrid, BMW X6 Active Hybrid and the MINI Crossover Concept will proceed ahead as planned.

BMW Gran Turismo Four-Door Coupe

Hold onto your X6; it looks like BMW will have to make do with only one four-door coupe for the time being. We have word that the upcoming Gran Turismo is headed for the big tour in the sky.

BMW Gran Turismo Four-Door Coupe-1

BMW Gran Turismo Four-Door Coupe-2

The low-slung four-door 'coupe' was to be based on the new 7-series and modeled after the stunning Concept CS first shown at the 2007 Shanghai auto show. It would have become the company's flagship and gone on sale in 2010.

This is BMW's first casualty resulting from the weakened global economy. Company insiders say that all other projects are still on track, though the fate of a V-12–powered 760i replacement is questionable. The 7-series hybrid's audience may also be limited to the U.S. and Japan, as Europeans can instead opt for the diesel-powered 730d, which gets comparable fuel economy.

Sadly, one project that will live on is BMW's PAS. We would have happily traded the Gran Turismo for this odd-looking 'Progressive Activity Sedan'—yet another variation on the 5-series platform that splits hairs between the 5-series wagon and the niche-making X6.

With the Gran Turismo out of the picture, at least BMW won't have to fight with Maserati over the name. Better to stick to alphanumerics, anyway.

BMW 335d Sedan With BluePerformance, A Diesel For The Masses [Bmw 335d]

BMW dropped their hotrod oil burner today at the LA Auto Show, showcasing a twin-turbo 3.0 liter diesel engine that is both quick and clean. Clean enough to be legal in all 50 states while keeping it's fun factor. Power numbers sit pretty at 265 horses and 425 lbs-ft of torque; just enough to pull the porch off of your buddy's house, if you so desire. Sprints from 0-60 run at a very non-dieselish six seconds flat while fuel mileage estimates are 23 MPG in the city and 36 MPG on the open road. Of course, iDrive is back with an all-new learning curve to bring many hours of knob-spinning glee as you fumble your way through a plethora of menus. Full details in the press release below.

Check out more on the BMW 335d from CarandDriver.com

BMW Advanced Diesel with BluePerformance: efficiency and dynamics in abundance
With the introduction of the new BMW Advanced diesel powered 335d and X5 xDrive35d models, the BMW Group announces another step in its strategy for EfficientDynamics. Both models will feature a 50-state emission compliant version of BMW's award winning sequential-turbo 3.0-liter diesel engine - the first performance-oriented and efficient Advanced Diesel engine in BMW's U.S. line.

The sequential-turbo 3.0-liter diesel engine powering both models employs both a very small and a larger turbocharger combined with an innovative intake system enabling the engine to develop 265 hp. Even more impressive are the torque characteristics. Fully 80% of the torque is available from 1100rpm to 4200rpm. The peak torque is 425 lbs-ft at 1750rpm - almost as much as BMW's 6.0-liter V12. The performance is what the enthusiast would expect from a BMW. The 335d is capable of sprinting from 0 - 60 mph in six seconds flat. The X5 xDrive35d will do it in 6.9 seconds. No other diesels in the US will perform like this pair of BMW Advanced Diesel models.

Coupled with this performance potential is impressive fuel economy. The EPA mileage estimates for the 335d are 23 city and 36 highway. The X5 xDrive35d is rated at 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. Both offer the convenience of travelling approximately 580 miles between fill-ups.

Thanks to BluePerformance technology, this unparalleled blend of performance and efficiency can only be found in a BMW Advanced Diesel.

2009 BMW 3 Series Sedan and Sports Wagon: The quintessential sports sedan and wagon once again raise the bar
The 2009 3 Series Sedan and Sports Wagon are poised to maintain market leadership with updated exterior and interior styling, new technologies, enhanced ergonomics and the introduction of BMW Advanced Diesel with BluePerformance in the 335d Sedan.

A Subtle freshening of exterior design features a new front end, more dynamic profile, and wider rear stance. Headlights and taillights are new, yet present a typically BMW look, innovative lighting technology and 3-dimensional effects. The refinement of the interior design reflects and complements the distinctive exterior design. Among functional updates are ergonomically enhanced placement of power-window controls for the driver and new, expanded storage possibilities.

The optional onboard navigation system features an all-new iDrive control concept and display. It offers new menus, new direct-select keys and Programmable Memory Keys. Subscribers to the optional BMW Assist Convenience Plan can access "BMW Search" to quickly find a desired business or other point of interest with just a key word search, using Google search technology and intelligence, even from the convenience of your home or office. Once a destination has been found, route guidance or a hands-free call from a Bluetooth® -linked phone is available at just a simple push of a button.

For 2009, BMW maintains its position as a leader in technology while providing the most innovative blend of performance and fuel economy that are the hallmarks of BMW EfficientDynamics.

BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid Adds Power, Efficiency [BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid]

Ahead of its official reveal at the LA Auto Show, the official details on the BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid have finally been released after months of us sitting on the edges of our seats, waiting with bated breath. The ActiveHybrid (as opposed to the other name considered, "LazyHybrid") is a "preview of potential" for things to come from BMW and shows off a mild hybrid operating from a motor integrated transmission, which was jointly developed with Chrysler and General Motors. The motor "assists" a 400 HP, 450 lb-ft, 4.4 liter V8 with its own 20 HP and 155 lb-ft of torque providing oil barons with cognitive dissonance the feel-good benefit of 15% better fuel economy. Complete details in an uncompromisingly self satisfied press release below.

Check out more on the 7-series Hybrid Concept from CarandDriver.com

BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid: The BMW of hybrids
As an integral part of the BMW EfficientDynamics strategy, the BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid previews the potential of BMW ActiveHybrid technology in a luxury sedan. In typical BMW fashion, this new concept car combines a significant reduction of fuel consumption and emissions with a level of driving dynamics never seen before even in this class of hybrid cars.

The BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid is an intelligent symbiosis of BMW's new twin-turbo V8 engine and electric drive as a mild hybrid concept. A compact electric motor, integrated into the transmission housing, replaces the conventional alternator as well as the starter. Power to run all electrics on-board the car is generated by means of Brake Energy Regeneration. The combination of internal combustion engine and electric motor take the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8's already potent 400 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque and supplies an additional 20 horsepower and up to 155 lb-ft of torque as needed. The drivetrain technology featured in the concept car allows enhanced driving dynamics together with a reduction of fuel consumption and emissions by 15 percent in the EU test cycle compared to the same car running on a combustion engine alone. At the same time the use of BMW ActiveHybrid technology does not require any compromises in driving qualities and features of the BMW 7 Series.

Energy is stored in a compact lithium-ion battery housed in the luggage compartment. An Auto Start Stop function helps to ensure optimum efficiency in all driving situations.

The hybrid technology showcased in the BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid is perfectly suited to the new benchmark in the full-sized performance luxury sedan segment just as the two-mode hybrid technology used in the BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid, also on display in Los Angeles, is well matched to the world's first Sports Activity Coupe.

BMW insider reveals details about ‘green’ supercar based on M1 Homage

Despite BMW not having built a true supercar for 30 years since its original M1 model, a "high ranking insider" at the firm insists management is trying to reinvent its performance image with a new 'green' supercar based on the wild M1 Homage concept revealed earlier this year. BMW is reportedly studying the viability of the project, with the ultimate goal to create a two-seater sports car that showcases all of firm's most sophisticated environmental technology, with a view to releasing it for a limited production run at the end of 2012. Speaking with AutoWeek, the insider said that "the idea is to take the supercar to a whole new level of environmental compatibility using technology and materials already in wide use today", presumably referring to lightweight materials and BMW's already in-use technologies such as stop-start systems, regenerative braking systems and direct injection, as well as other possible technologies such as cylinder deactivation. Rumors of a possible return of the M1 supercar have been coming since late September, and bringing a flagship sports model to market will help BMW compete against the likes of the Audi R8 and upcoming Mercedes Benz SLC Gullwing.

Spy shots: BMW X6 ActiveHybrid

BMW first revealed that its X6 SUV would be available as a hybrid model when it rolled out the X6 ActiveHybrid concept vehicle at last year's Frankfurt Motor Show. The car has since been spotted testing in prototype form on both sides of the Atlantic and these latest spy images reveal a near-production ready version of the upcoming model. Previous prototypes were seen sporting an oversized bulge on the bonnet, most likely to accommodate the new hybrid hardware. The latest prototype looks much more like the standard X6, although a small bump remains. The new hybrid will feature BMW's version of the modular two-mode hybrid system jointly developed with Daimler and General Motors and is expected to improve fuel efficiency by about 20% when compared to the xDrive50i V8 model. The design uses twin electric motors which can either be used to boost acceleration, charge the batteries or as a generator to mutually power each other.

The New Landshark has landed - 2009 BMW Z4

Well folks, today is finally the day we get a true glimpse at the 2009 BMW Z4 and what a glimpse it is! As BMW noted in it's press release, the new Z4 is the first BMW  Z Series to carry a hardtop convertible. As such, this new Z4 will be a hybrid of both coupe and convertible which may leave little hope for those of us looking for a successor to the E85 coupe.

Moving on though, the new Z4 is a tour de force of  styling, technology and performance. For those of you that followed the many test mule pictures that have littered the internet the you probably already knew what to expect in terms of styling, especially based on some of the prospective spy shots we've shown here before. However, the Z4 looks even better than I had hoped. It retains the classic sports car layout with a potent engine tucked under a long hood with a soft, tapering tail at the rear.

The cut lines that glide down the car from wheel well to wheel well are a strong evolution of the original flame surfacing lines seen on the previous generation Z4. These same cut lines are then accentuated by the fender inlets behind the front wheels, a styling cue taken directly from the CS Concept and already spotted on the new F01 7 Series.

Continued

Speaking of the CS Concept, strong cues of the CS Concepts nose are found in the nose of BMW's new land shark. The protruding, wider grill is the most distinct feature of this car and taken directly from the CS. The headlamps of the new Z4 also share CS DNA coupled with an evolution of the previous Z4's headlamp architecture. On the flip side, at the new Z4's rear, we see more styling cues drawn from the current 6 Series with the tail lamps while style retaining the prior Z4's general shape though the rear deck does have more of a supple, gradual slope compared to the very shear, sharp drop of the rear deck of the old Z4.

Moving inside the car, we see an interior that almost exactly duplicates that of the CS Concept's. In my opinion, this interior really focuses the dash and instruments much more toward the driver, which is thankfully the opposite of the direction BMW's interiors had been moving. Granted it's difficult to tell, but the fit and finish of interior appears to be very refined and polished and pulls design cues from the CS again with the electronic handbrake and the unfortunately goofy looking shifter on automatic/DCT models. That said, the Z4 will be a very comfortable, cozy place  to be that wraps around it's occupants juxtaposed to the somewhat expansive, long dash-laden interior of the previous Z4.

Outside of styling, the Z4 brings a lot of the new techno goodies that BMW has been working on. Just to name a few, we'll see a new 7-Speed DCT transmission, the improved iDrive interface, electronic handbrake, Dynamic Drive Control - which makes the suspension adjustable(my favorite new option!) Needless to say, the new Z4 will pack the pinnacle of BMW's current road-going technology. Who said Audi's the only one with the mantra "Vorsprung durch Technic?"

Now, for the most important bit. How's it going to perform? It's going to perform pretty damn well actually! As many had hoped, the new Z4 will come equipped with the award-winning 3.0L twin turbo inline-6, which should keep all of the enthusiast crowd happy until BMW graces us with the M variant. The 300 horsepower engine can be coupled to not only a 6-speed manual but the new dual-clutch 7 speed automatic which will likely shift faster than the traditional manual transmission.

The twin turbo will also be complimented by what many of the US BMW enthusiasts will recognize as the E90 330i engine: the 3.0L 255 HP inline-6. While the twin turbo version with DCT will weigh in just shy of 3,300 lbs, don't fret, it'll still do the 0 to 60 time in 5.0 seconds flat or likely faster given BMW's traditionally conservative performance ratings. So, we've got another BMW that's treading heavily into Porsche 911/Cayman territory? Sounds good to me.

Before you get all excited and run to the phone to call your dealer, you've got to get this new naming system for the car down, otherwise your dealer won't have a clue which engine you want. Thanks to ridiculous laws requiring more clear, non-letter/number nomenclature for model names, the new Z4 will be called the BMW Z4 sDrive35i which stands for "Sports Driver 3.5L injection" - I think, that's my best guess for this new, terrible naming system.

I much prefer the Z4 3.0Si, a throwback to the model numbering of the 1970's. So, if you don't feel like dropping a ton of coin on the top-of-the-line twin turbo sDrive35i then spring for the sDrive30i which should likely start somewhere in the low-to-mid $40's. Look for the new Z4 to officially drop on dealerships May 9, 2009 according to BMW.

Look for us to have a review and further information as we learn more on BMW's hot new roadster.

BMW LayerON Concept: Personalized rent car

The BMW LayerON is a design study of a futuristic rental vehicle which can be customized in shape by means of electrically controlled outer panels. It was created by students at The European Institute of Design in Turin, Italy. The three designers are Aydar Nigmatullin(Russia), Patrick De Laet Moreno(Spain) and Rocco Sergio D'Argento (Italy).

Back in August, we wrote an article on a contest sponsored by BMW where students at the European Institute of Design were creating 2015 BMW concepts. The students' job was to interpret the language, evolution and the trademark essence, in view of the company's future perspectives.

The project BMW LayerOn was developed in two stages, first they focused on future world and society.

"We noticed that the world 'goes virtual' : people buy less and rent more. The post-industrial society is characterized by the vast use of services and, respectively, decreased purchase of goods."

"We imagined that future generations will go further following this trend. And they would like to have a rental car when they need it rather than to buy one."

Another trend taken into consideration was the need for personalization, the possibility of customizing your car to meet your needs.

"Everybody want to have a car that reflects one's personality, a car that is fully customizable. And this was our challenge: to make a car for rent, but still personal."

The second stage, development, was to incorporate the case study from step one. The LayerON has a bio-inspired skeleton structure on which the covering panels create a sort of outer skin.

The front panels have a sandwich structure: the plastic material outside is combined with an internal layer which is electrically controlled and can can contract and dilate, thus changing the overall shape of the vehicle. Gina Concept was based on a similar principle where instead of a steel or aluminum body parts, high-tech-textile is used that can be formed in multiple ways.

Moreover, the design would allow downloading personal driver settings, for custom exterior appearance, favorite interface of car display, electronic driver's assistant voice and even driving preferences.

What I love the most about the design is the focus on the driver's habits, preferences and the desire for personalization, something that current BMWs are missing. Despite the skepticism, I do see these type of concepts making their way into the public market within the next 15-20 years.

And here is a pretty cool video:
