Spy Shots: BMW Progressive Activity Sedan undergoing more testing

With the Geneva Auto Show less than two months away, the BMW PAS, short for Progressive Activity Sedan, is undergoing more testing on the beautiful Munich streets. The Geneva Show will offer us the world premiere of one of the most talked and controversial concepts of 2008: PAS or 5 Series GT. So far the initial reactions weren’t very positive, but each time, sources close to BMW reassured us that the new vehicle will be one of a kind, opening a new market segment.

The car was spotted by Christian Wimmer and as expected, the car is still in the previous stages prior to the final evaluation phase where the test mule wears less camo and reveals more details. In these spy shots, the PAS looks quite massive, with a long wheelbase and a pretty tall ride height.

The BMW Progressive Activity Sedan has quite a road presence and a very sporty look for a crossover. BMW sees the PAS as a sedan alternative for elderly BMW clients who want higher sitting position -but not too high like in a SUV- and more spacious ambient.

Our sources say that the PAS will have rear L-shape lights, following the 7 Series trend. The side shots show the X6ish style, a coupe look but with a lower roof line. The PAS will fit comfortably four people with seats similar to the X6. It is also expected the PAS to have common design elements with the new 7 Series.

As far as myself, I am more excited to see the new BMW PAS or 5er GT, as some call it, mostly because it will give us some indication on which direction BMW is going with their future vehicles. The next generation BMW 5 Series will be the most awaited car in 2009 and 2010.

2010 BMW 5 Series - Rendering

A new rendering of the next generation 2010 BMW 5 Series has surfaced on the web. Our friend Jon Sibal, who has done several renderings for us before, is the author of this CGI.

The rendering is based on the 5 series bumper we posted last week and it incorporates some design elements and hints coming from people close to BMW.

The 2010 BMW 5 Series rendering shows a larger front grille than the current model, a trend started by the new 7 Series. The front-end is a combination of the CS Concept and the 2009 BMW 7 Series. Despite the popular assumption that the 7 Series was inspired by the CS Concept, the reality is that, the now cancelled CS,  has imported the elements from the new 7, and this seems to be the case with new 5 Series.

2010 BMW 5 Series photos

Many of the design changes in 2010 BMW 5 Series are influenced by the new European pedestrian safety standards. As it was mentioned before, the next-generation BMW 5-series will soften the harder lines of the current E60 with a cleaner front-end design and where the bonnet meets the lenses in an angular shape.

The 2010 BMW 5 Series is rumored to use the same six cylinder twin-turbo engine found in the 535i model. The high-end model will most likely get the V8 twin-turbo 4.0 liter engine -407hp, that powers the BMW X6 xDrive50i and it will feature an eight-speed automatic transmission with an all-wheel drive option being available. The entry level models in Europe will  be the BMW 520i - 204 hp and 525i - 235 hp. Diesel engines will complete the line-up.

Once again, keep in mind, this an artist rendering and just a rendering, but it incorporates many of the BMW "leaks" or inside information. As soon as more information emerge, I do expect these renderings to change a bit.

Overall, great job Jon!

BMW reconfirms 3 Series Crossover

No breaking news here, but according to Autocar UK, BMW's CEO Norbert Reithofer has confirmed the future launch of a smaller, more affordable luxury crossover, internally named V3. The first rumors of a 2012 BMW 3 Series Crossover surfaced back in April of 2008 and L.A Auto Show brought the official confirmation that the V3 model will make it to production.

The PAC, Progressive Activity Coupe or V3, as it is known internally, is expected to based on Long Wheel Base 3 Series. The Progressive Activity Coupe has a higher roof when compared to the existing 3 Series Wagon and of course, a longer wheelbase as well. According to Autocar, it will fill a slot between the 3 Series Touring and the BMW X3, a statement that might not be entirely true, since the next generation X3 will grow in size and the X1 will be taking its place.

The idea of a PAC vehicle is that the little less wealthy 3er customers might find 5 Series too expensive, X3 too big, so they might find the V3 PAC being the right choice.

As Autocar mentioned as well, we learned a while back that the 3-series crossover will come with rear-wheel drive as standard, but four-wheel drive will be offered as an option.

The engines are likely to be the ones from the BMW 3-series models, with a future line-up of turbocharged four and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, basically expect all the "goodies" from the 3 Series to make it into the PAC as well.

The last two paragraphs on the Autocar article are probably the most interesting ones:

When he was asked if the worldwide financial crisis had affected plans for the 3-series GT, Reithofer said, "We haven't cancelled the development project for a crossover off the 3-series because it is considered a volume builder with which we can earn good money."

And

Reithofer has been studying proposals to build the new car at BMW's Spartanburg factory in the US state of South Carolina, or the company's Rosslyn plant in South Africa, the source of the majority of 3-series saloons sold in the UK.

The first quote reinforces what we knew so far: BMW will focus on smaller vehicles, more efficient and less expensive to manufacture. The second one gives great hope to the Spartanburg Plant which will see an increase in production units per year and implicitly more jobs.

Spy Shots: BMW 5-Series Touring

Who needs a 5-Series PAS when you've got one of these? The next BMW 5-Series Touring is out testing, and despite the fact that it looks as long as a football field and it's buried under cladding, it doesn't look awkward or ungainly - something that cannot exactly be said for the coming Mercedes E-Class wagon.

The BMW wagon isn't expected to debut until the latter portion of 2010, but there are hints that the car will get the 400 hp, twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 - perhaps for an M Touring assault on Mercedes' E63 AMG wagon? The family carrier is also hinted to offer turbodiesels and three transmission options: 8-speed automatic, 7-speed DKG, and 6-speed manual.

BMW finally green-lights 5-Series "Progressive Activity Sedan"

Call it V5, 5-Series GT, 5-Series Fastback, Progressive Activity Sedan... call it what you will. Whatever moniker you give it, BMW has evidently crossed the Rubicon and there's no turning back. As expected based upon BMW's previously leaked roster of 2009 reveals, the 5-Series -based hatchback has been approved. Called "one of the bravest designs ever signed off by BMW," it is BMW's take on everything-all-the-time: a flexible, luxury GT.

Although it is being referred to as a 5-Series family member, the car is actually expected to arrive on the same platform as the 7 Series. As such, the PAS is coming off as the ultimate tweener car: longer than a 5-Series sedan, yet shorter than a 7-Series; taller than a 5-Series, yet shorter than an X6. Cost is expected to straddle the gap, too: it should cost more than a 5 Series but less than a 7-Series. One description offered was "more of a 'tall 7-Series hatchback than a low-rise X6."

At the very front, the PAS is said to take cues from the CS Concept. That nose treatment flows into a sedan-like lower body topped by an X6 greenhouse, rear hatch, and rear end treatment. Interior design cues will come from the new Z4, and a roomy, semi-raised cabin is promised. Possible engines for the car in Europe include the 3.0-liter turbo diesel, while a 3.0-liter gas could would come to the States.

2010 BMW 5 Series bumper design leaked

One of our readers sent in a couple of days ago a photo of what it seems to be the front bumper of the next generation 2010 BMW 5 Series, codename F10. It took us a bit to analyze it against the spy photos we have seen in the past and with the help of some friends close to BMW, apparently we have a winner.

The bumper design is close if not identical to the production one that will be featured on the 2010 BMW 5 Series and despite the previous rumors that the 5er might sport a front-end inspired from the 7er, I can certainly tell you that this is not the case. One interesting observation is that the BMW roundel will sit on the bumper and not on the hood as it does now.

Does it ring a bell? Yes, similar to the new 2009 BMW Z4.

I, for one, am happy that the bumper is quite different from the new 7 Series, which I still believe that it has larger than normal "kidneys".

Hat tip to Tom!

2007 BMW 530Li

BMW 530Li

The perfect combination of driving dynamics and motoring comfort is now available in truly impressive style: Focusing exclusively on the Chinese market, German premium carmaker BMW has developed three brand-new models. The BMW 530Li, BMW 525Li and BMW 523Li offer outstanding performance combined with the supreme interior comfort of a particularly luxurious Business Saloon, extending the line-up of BMW 5-Series models already highly successful in China. The most conspicuous exterior feature versus the models already established in the market is the increase in wheelbase by 140 millimetres or 5.5 inches.

In particular, this extra space benefits the passengers on the rear seats, where grand touring comfort in the BMW 5-Series now reaches a level never seen before. A further enhancement is the rear console with its integrated entertainment system developed especially for the BMW 530Li and BMW 525Li. Introducing the new BMW 530Li, BMW 525Li and BMW 523Li built at the Shenyang Plant in the Province of Liaoning, German carmaker BMW is once again emphasising its clear orientation towards the Chinese car market with its particular demands and requirements.

Driving dynamics typical of BMW with new style and calibre.

The new BMW 530Li, BMW 525Li and BMW 523Li meet all expectations in terms of driving dynamics. Transmission of power to the rear axle, perfect axle load distribution, the modern aluminium suspension, and weight-optimised construction give the long versions of the BMW 5-Series a standard of agility exceptional in their class. The new models are driven by straight-six power units representing the state-of-the-art in BMW engine development. The 3.0-litre in the BMW 530Li develops maximum output of 190 kW/258 hp. Displacing 2.5 litres in each case, the BMW 525Li offers maximum output of 160 kW/218 hp while the BMW 523 Li develops 130 kW/177 hp.

Developed in Munich, built in Shenyang.

The new BMW 530Li, BMW 525Li and BMW 523Li are an ongoing development of the BMW 5-Series that take the special requirements and demands of the Chinese car market into account. In particular, they offer an even more prestigious look on the road combined with exceptional comfort and space on the rear seats. And at the same time, the new models come with all the key qualities of a BMW 5-Series in terms of driving dynamics and agility, without making the slightest compromise. Offering a convincing combination of these features was indeed the most important objective in the development process handled by BMW engineers in Germany: All the know-how of BMW's specialists in body construction, chassis engineering, design, drivetrain technology, safety and assistance systems has gone into the new models at BMW's Research and Development Centre in Munich.

This has served to create cars tailored in their overall concept to the requirements of the Chinese market and at the same time maintaining all the unique standards of German premium carmaker BMW. Reflecting the philosophy that "production follows the market", the new models are built by specialists at the Shenyang Plant who benefit from direct contact with the sales market. A further point is that Shenyang applies all the processes and quality and safety standards applicable to BMW production facilities the world over - standards that are extremely strict and demanding.

Design: sporting and elegant all in one.

Despite the significant increase in interior space, the new long-wheelbase models naturally retain their sporting and elegant look. Hence, the BMW 530Li, BMW 525Li and BMW 523Li stand out clearly and unmistakably as leading representatives of their brand. The increase in format ensured by the longer wheelbase, which is up by 140 millimetres or 5.5 inches, is visible only from the side, retaining the unique, dynamic and elegant lines of the BMW 5-Series that are just as harmonious as before the car's discreetly modified proportions.

The most striking feature at the front is the large dual headlamps wrapped far around into the sides of the car. A further sign of distinction characterising the muscular look of the BMW 5-Series is the BMW kidney grille so typical of the brand. Horizontal lines at the rear, in turn, give the car a powerful and broad stance on the road, emphasising its stable and sporting qualities. And last but certainly not least, the rear lamp clusters likewise stretch far into the sides.

Exclusive interior.

The interior is dominated by smooth and flowing lines with the instruments, displays and controls for particularly important driving functions situated in a perfectly ergonomic arrangement around the steering wheel.

The BMW 530Li, BMW 525Li and BMW 523Li come as standard with a multifunction steering wheel. High-quality Dakota leather on the seats and door linings, in turn, ensures a stylish and sophisticated ambience, while decorative trim in "titanium dark" or wood on the dashboard and centre console again highlights the sophisticated character of the car. A significant increase in legroom ensures exceptional riding comfort on the rear seats of the long-wheelbase BMW 5-Series. This comfort is further enhanced by the electrically operated glass sliding roof featured as standard on the new models. Further standard features are sun visors on the rear side windows as well as a sunblind in the rear window, protecting the passengers from excessively bright sunlight.

Muscle, efficiency, and refinement: the straight-six power units.

The BMW 530Li, BMW 525Li and BMW 523Li all feature modern straight-six power units. Displacing 3.0 and 2.5 litres respectively, these engines stand out through superior power and performance, a high standard of efficiency, and superior motoring refinement. The innovative, composite magnesium-aluminium crankcase gives the new six-cylinders a further reduction in weight, benefiting both overall economy and the car's agility. Further outstanding features of the new power units are fully variable VALVETRONIC valve management and variable double-VANOS camshaft control. As a result of this superior technology, the new 3.0-litre offers an increase in output over its predecessor by no less than 12 per cent while running on 12 per cent less fuel.

The pinnacle in the engine range is the 3.0-litre in the BMW 530Li, developing maximum output of 190 kW/258 hp and peak torque of 300 Nm/221 lb ft. This enables the BMW 530Li to accelerate to 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 250 km/h or 155 mph. The 2.5-litre power unit in the BMW 525Li, in turn, develops maximum output of 160 kW/218 hp and peak torque of 250 Nm or 184 lb ft, accelerating the car to 100 km/h in 8.7 seconds and providing a top speed of 242 km/h or 150 mph. Again displacing 2.5 litres, the power unit in the BMW 523Li offers maximum output of 130 kW/177 hp with acceleration to 100 km/h in 9.6 seconds and top speed of 227 km/h or 141 mph. All versions of the long-wheelbase BMW 5-Series Saloon come as standard with a six-speed automatic gearbox.

Modern suspension for superior agility and supreme handling.

The exceptional driving sensation in the long-wheelbase BMW 5-Series Saloon is largely attributable to the very smooth and consistent distribution of axle load. Harmonious weight distribution of almost 50 : 50 front-to-rear is crucial to the car's driving behaviour. This balance is ensured by light engines, the weight-optimised front axle, and the all-aluminium suspension carried over from the BMW 7-Series Saloon, all providing an ideal match for rear-wheel drive so typical of BMW.

The dynamic driving character of the new models is further enhanced by extremely precise hydraulic rack-and-pinion steering including Servotronic. This elaborate system controls the degree of steering assistance as a function of road speed, enhancing both motoring comfort and driving safety in the process. Extra-large 16-inch swing calliper brakes on all four wheels with inner-vented brake discs ensure superior stopping power and excellent resistance to fading. And a continuous, ongoing wear indicator provides information at all times on the current condition of the brake pads.

Equipment: versatile and exclusive.

Offering high-class materials and a wide range of new functions, the passenger compartment in the new BMW 530Li, BMW 525Li and BMW 523Li ensures a supreme standard of sophisticated comfort reflecting the modern demands made of an exclusive premium car in both the world of business and in private life. Particularly the new rear console with its integrated entertainment system emphasises the stylish feeling of prestigious motoring at the rear in the BMW 530Li and BMW 525Li, enhancing passenger comfort to an even higher level of perfection.

The seats are finished in sophisticated Dakota leather. The front seats come as standard with electrical adjustment and boast an integrated memory function, with electric seat heating coming as yet another important feature in the BMW 530Li and BMW 525Li. And last but certainly not least, rear seat heating is also standard in the BMW 530Li and BMW 525Li for even greater comfort at all times.

Unique comfort at the rear.

The most striking feature within the new BMW 530Li and BMW 525Li is the rear console with its integrated entertainment system and an air vent for individual fresh air control. Apart from the BMW radio Professional, a CD player is also integrated as standard in the rear console.

Motoring comfort at the rear is enhanced in the BMW 530Li and BMW 525Li by a DVD player. A further feature in these models is the eight-inch screens integrated in a console in the back of the front seats, while the passenger sitting on the right-hand rear seat is even able to enjoy a folding table coming out of the seat in front. Moreover, the BMW 530Li is equipped with a TV set. Last but certainly not least, the position of the front passenger's seat may be controlled from the right-hand seat at the rear by an additional switch at the back of the seat. This serves to further increase legroom at the rear and optimise the use and control of the table folding out of the front seat.

2008 BMW 530i

BMW 530i

More convincingly than any other car in its class, the BMW 5-Series combines supreme style and presence, on the one hand, with sporting power and performance, on the other. And now the looks, driving experience and superior comfort offered by the 5-Series reach a new standard of perfection, highly attractive modifications on the exterior and significant, visible and tangible enhancement of style and sophistication in the interior accentuating the sporting, elegant and classy character of both the BMW 5-Series Saloon and the BMW 5-Series Touring.

The premium ambience within the car's interior is borne out by particularly sophisticated materials, attractive colours and re-designed interior elements and controls.

Power units even more muscular than before and with exceptional all-round efficiency raise the line-up of engines in the BMW 5-Series to an even higher standard never experienced before, BMW's petrol and diesel engines already widely lauded for their superior power and supreme refinement now also taking the lead in terms of economy in all performance classes.

Benefiting from this kind of power, the BMW 5-Series is entering a new dimension of Efficient Dynamics attributable to a wide range of enhancements on and around the engine for maximum fuel economy and minimum emissions. A particular highlight is BMW's innovative High Precision Injection direct fuel injection technology featured on the straight-six power units. Other new developments on the drivetrain are the particularly quick and precise six-speed automatic transmission as well as BMW's unique Automatic Sports Transmission.

Being directly connected to the engine and featuring precise gear management and selection, the automatic transmission versions of the three most powerful petrol-engined models in the new BMW 5-Series boast even greater fuel economy than their respective manual gearbox counterparts. And as a further highlight three engine variants on the new BMW 5-Series are available with BMW xDrive permanent and variable all-wheel-drive technology. On this intelligent all-wheel-drive system, optimised control and management electronics ensure an even more spontaneous and precise response to changes in driving conditions.

The new BMW 5-Series also offers a wide range of innovations in driver assistance and comfort features. As an example, it is the only car in its segment available with Active Steering, a High-Beam Assistant, BMW Night Vision, a Head-Up Display and, from now on, also with Active Cruise Control featuring a Stop & Go function as well as Lane Change Warning.

Featured as standard, iDrive control with no less than eight freely programmable favourite buttons as well as an optionally available navigation system with voice control and full-word entry enhance the long-distance touring comfort of the BMW 5-Series to a new, unprecedented standard.

Exterior design: sporting character with new elegance.

New highlights in design and ongoing refinement ensure even greater harmony of sporting character and sophisticated elegance in both the BMW 5-Series Saloon and the BMW 5-Series Touring. The headlights in their characteristic look, for example, now come with new clear glass technology, transparent glass panels covering the direction indicators, chrome surrounds highlighting the technically sophisticated character of the round headlights.

The surrounds on the BMW double kidney grille, in turn, are now flush with the surfaces on the front air dam, and the air intake sweeping up at the side along the same dynamic line as the headlight contours also contributes to the smooth, harmonious and friendly look of the front end. And last but not least, the horizontal trim bar in the middle highlights the wide track of the car and its muscular stance on the road.

An additional light contour along the side-sills gives the body of both the Saloon and the Touring an even sleeker, more stretched look from the side. The rear end, in turn, is dominated by horizontal lines highlighting the look of superior power. Like the headlights at the front, the rear lights also come in a new, sophisticated clear-glass look and now feature LED direction indicators. And last but certainly not least, the trim bar around the rear numberplate is now defined even more smoothly and precisely on the new BMW 5-Series Saloon.

Refined and sophisticated style within the interior.

Enhanced control comfort, new design and particularly sophisticated materials on the surfaces give the interior of the new BMW 5-Series a new standard of quality both the driver and his passengers will see and feel at first sight, ensuring a wonderful experience of driving pleasure at all times. High-class Pearl Gloss Chrome, the very pleasant rubber finish on the controls for smooth and easy handling, comfortable padding on the door armrests and panels as well as on the centre console all contribute to the particular style and class of the interior. At the same time additional storage options give the new BMW 5-Series an even higher standard of practical function.

The most striking feature clearly bearing out the new refinement of the car's interior design is the twin-tone finish on the door panels: Black door trim bars at the top and the lower panel section in the respective interior colour, together with elegantly sweeping decal bars, take up and continue the look and the materials used on the dashboard. The buttons for the window lifts and mirror adjustment have been integrated in the armrest, just as the handles for closing the doors have been optimised in their ergonomic design. The door pockets now integrated even more effectively than before in the door panels provide greater storage capacity for enhanced convenience on the road.

In its appealing look and ideal ergonomics, the new, electrical gear selector lever for the automatic transmission merges perfectly into the stylish interior. Control of the iDrive vehicle management system has also been optimised to an even higher standard, the Controller positioned on the centre console and the central Control Display in the dashboard serving to mastermind the Climate Control, Navigation, Entertainment and Communication functions.

Apart from enhanced menu guidance and refined graphics, particularly the new favourite buttons ensure even more intuitive control and operation of the car. The eight freely available buttons with their favourite functions allow the driver and front passenger to access important functions very quickly, smoothly and easily: All they do is press one single button to activate, say, a specific destination, a telephone number dialled frequently, or a preferred radio station saved in advance.

Power units: opening up a new dimension of Efficient Dynamics.

The new BMW 5-Series is entering the market with a choice of no less than nine power units either brand-new or thoroughly updated over the former versions. All engines offer a significant improvement in fuel economy, all engines rank right at the top in terms of all-round economy and efficiency within their respective category.

Depending on the specific engine involved, the various models in the new BMW 5-Series come with a range of technologies and features serving to minimise fuel consumption and emissions. Just some of these new technologies are Brake Energy Regeneration concentrating the generation of electricity for the on-board network on the car's overrun and brake phases, a gearshift indicator helping the driver of a new BMW 5-Series with manual gearbox to shift gears even more economically, as well as active management of the brake and cooling air flaps serving to improve the car's aerodynamics.

Operating on-demand, the electrical coolant pump in the new BMW 5-Series consumes much less power than a conventional pump and helps the engine reach its normal operating temperature at an earlier point. The Varioserv steering assistance pump, varying the curve ring as a function of pressure and volume flow, avoids the usual increase in drive losses as a function of higher engine speeds. And when the driver and passengers do not require the air conditioning, the a/c compressor is disconnected to reduce drag forces to a minimum.

Right at the top of the engine range, the two eight-cylinders, benefiting from optimised engine management and numerous innovations for enhanced fuel economy, offer a standard of efficiency quite unheard of in this performance class. Powered by a 4.8-litre, 270 kW/367 hp V8, the BMW 550i accelerates to 100 km/h in just 5.2 (Saloon) and, respectively, 5.3 (Touring) seconds.

Top speed is limited electronically to 250 km/h or 155 mph. Average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle, finally, is just 10.9 litres/100 kilometres (equal to 25.9 mpg Imp) in the Saloon and 11.2 litres/100 kilometres (25.2 mpg Imp) in the Touring, while the automatic transmission models are even more economical and fuel-efficient in each case, reducing fuel consumption to just 10.3 litres (27.4 mpg Imp) for the Saloon and 10.7 litres (26.4 mpg Imp) for the Touring.

Developing maximum output of 225 kW/306 hp from engine capacity of 4.0 litres, the eight-cylinder in the BMW 540i also offers sporting performance of the highest calibre. Acceleration to 100 km/h comes in 6.1 seconds and top speed is again limited electronically to 250 km/h or 155 mph.

The dynamic driving experience provided by this model is also enhanced by truly remarkable all-round economy, with average fuel consumption in the manual gearbox model of 10.5 litres/100 kilometres (26.9 mpg Imp) on the Saloon and 9.7 litres (29.1 mpg Imp) in the BMW 540i with automatic transmission.

Straight-six with High Precision Injection.

The range of straight-six power units available for the BMW 5-Series comprises no less than three different power and performance versions. Two of these engines displace 3.0 litres, the third is a 2.5-litre. The most important highlight in technology featured by all of these power units is BMW's second-generation direct fuel injection allowing fuel-efficient lean burn operation throughout a broad range of engine loads and running speeds and therefore providing a significant improvement of all-round efficiency also in everyday motoring.

This superiority is ensured by innovative piezo-injectors arranged between the valves and injecting fuel into the combustion chambers in the immediate vicinity of the spark plug. This particular position of the spark plug achieved by BMW's engine development specialists despite the limited space within the combustion chambers is the prerequisite for the new jet-guided combustion process. The result is particularly precise fuel injection without the usual losses of fuel on the walls of the combustion chamber.

In the BMW 530i the 3.0-litre straight-six petrol engine develops a dynamic 200 kW/272 hp. Acceleration to 100 km/h comes in 6.3 seconds in the Saloon and takes 6.5 seconds in the BMW 530i Touring. Top speed of both models, in turn, is limited electronically to 250 km/h or 155 mph.

At 7.7 litres/100 kilometres (equal to 36.7 mpg Imp) (Saloon) and 7.9 litres/100 kilometres (35.8 mpg Imp) (Touring), average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle is approximately 12 per cent better than with the former models. And the improvement of fuel efficiency is even greater on the BMW 530i with automatic transmission, being reduced to 7.5 litres (Saloon) and, respectively, 7.7 litres (Touring) (37.7 and, respectively, 36.7 mpg Imp).

The BMW 525i also boasts a 3.0-litre straight-six within its engine bay, in this case developing maximum output of 160 kW/218 hp. This accelerates the Saloon to 100 km/h in 7.1 seconds and provides a top speed of 248 km/h or 154 mph. The BMW 525i Touring, in turn, accelerates to 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds and has a top speed of 243 km/h or 151 mph. Average fuel consumption under the EU standard is 7.4 litres/100 kilometres (38.2 mpg Imp) (Saloon) and, respectively, 7.7 litres/100 kilometres (36.7 mpg Imp) (Touring).

The third six-cylinder with High Precision Injection is the 2.5-litre power unit developing 140 kW/190 hp in the BMW 523i - which again makes this engine 10 kW/14 hp and, respectively, 5 Newton-metres/3.7 lb-ft more powerful than its predecessor. On the road, this kind of power enables the BMW 523i Saloon to accelerate to 100 km/h in 8.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 237 km/h or 147 mph. The BMW 523i Touring, in turn, accelerates to 100 km/h in 8.5 seconds and has a top speed of 230 km/h or 143 mph. Average fuel consumption of 7.3 litres/100 km (equal to 38.7 mpg Imp) (Saloon) and, respectively, 7.7 litres/100 km (36.7 mpg Imp) (Touring) is approximately 12 per cent lower than on the former models.

Diesel engines full of muscle and all-round economy.

The diesel-powered BMW 535d, BMW 530d and BMW 525d successfully combine impressive thrust with supreme all-round efficiency. Apart from displacing a substantial 3.0 litres, the straight-six power units featured in these outstanding models also share turbocharging and third-generation common-rail fuel injection. So over and above their superior economy, BMW's six-cylinder diesels stand out in particular through their impressive power and muscle interacting with exemplary smoothness and refinement at all times.

Each of the new diesel engines comes with an all-aluminium crankcase ensuring a significant reduction of weight. This not only ensures an even higher standard of fuel economy, but also means a significant improvement of agility thanks to the reduced load on the front axle. Emission management has also been improved, with a particulates filter of the latest generation and an oxidation catalyst integrated in one joint housing.

The new version of BMW's 3.0-litre six-cylinder with Variable Twin Turbo (VTT) technology featured in the BMW 535d is a truly fascinating example of Efficient Dynamics. The special feature of VTT turbocharging is that a small turbocharger is initially activated at lower engine speeds and serves to boost power spontaneously and without the slightest delay thanks to its low level of inertia reduced to an absolute minimum. Then, with the engine picking up speed, the second, larger turbocharger also cuts in, helping to develop maximum torque of 580 Newton-metres or 427 lb-ft at just 1,750 rpm.

Standing out as the most sporting and dynamic diesel engine in its class the world over, the power unit in the BMW 535d develops 10 kW/14 hp more than before, with maximum output now reaching 210 kW/286 hp. This accelerates the BMW 535d to 100 km/h in just 6.4 seconds (Touring: 6.5 seconds), with the top speed limited electronically on both the Saloon and Touring to 250 km/h or 155 mph.

Fuel economy has also been enhanced to a new level of perfection never seen before: Average fuel consumption of the new BMW 535d in the EU test cycle is now just 6.8 litres/100 kilometres (equal to 41.5 mpg Imp) (Saloon) or, respectively, 7.0 litres/100 kilometres (40.3 mpg Imp) (Touring), a reduction by approximately 15 per cent versus the former model.

Optimised: 3.0-litre diesel with variable turbine geometry.

Engine output in the new BMW 530d is now 173 kW/235 hp. This version of the 3.0-litre power unit boasts a turbocharger system with variable turbine geometry (VTG) for muscular and, at the same time, harmonious development of power and performance under all conditions. And again, this power unit develops its maximum torque - in this case 500 Newton-metres or 369 lb-ft - at just 1,750 rpm. The result is powerful acceleration to 100 km/h in just 6.8 seconds (Saloon) or, respectively, 6.9 seconds (Touring). Top speed of the new BMW 530d, in turn, is 250 km/h (155 mph) in the Saloon and 245 km/h (152 mph) in the Touring. At 6.4 (6.6) litres/100 km (equal to 44.1 and, respectively, 42.8 mpg Imp), average fuel consumption under the EU standard is about 12 per cent lower than on the former models.

The third version of the 3.0-litre six-cylinder develops maximum output of 145 kW/197 hp and peak torque of 400 Newton-metres (295 lb-ft). This kind of power accelerates the BMW 525d Saloon to 100 km/h in 7.6 seconds, with the Touring completing the same sprint in 7.8 seconds. Top speed of the Saloon is 237 km/h or 147 mph, while the Touring has a top speed of 232 km/h or 144 mph. Fuel consumption under the EU standard, finally, is 6.2 litres/100 km (equal to 45.6 mpg Imp) on the Saloon and 6.4 litres/100 km (44.1 mpg Imp) on the Touring, a reduction of up to 17 per cent versus the former models, depending on the car's transmission.

The entry-level model into the new BMW 5-Series comes with BMW's four-cylinder diesel displacing 2.0 litres already well known for its superior muscle and economy. Further features of this equally outstanding engine are common-rail fuel injection and a VTG turbocharger.

Developing maximum output of 120 kW/163 hp combined with peak torque of 340 Nm/251 lb-ft, the power unit featured in the BMW 520d also ensures sporting performance and dynamism on the road: The Saloon accelerates to 100 km/h in 8.6, the Touring in 8.9 seconds, and the top speed of the two models is 223 km/h (138 mph) and, respectively, 218 km/h (135 mph). Average fuel consumption, finally, is 5.9 (6.1) litres/100 kilometres, equal to 47.9 and, respectively, 46.3 mpg Imp.

2008 BMW 5-Series Security

BMW 5-Series Security

With the BMW 5-Series Security, BMW offers an armoured sedan in the premium segment of the upper medium category. Thanks to their unique security concept, the BMW 550i Security and the BMW 530i Security guarantee effective protection from criminal attacks. The two models combine state-of-the-art security technology with the sporty flair, ride comfort and exclusive fittings characteristic of the BMW 5-Series.

The BMW 5-Series provides an ideal basis for a particularly effective security vehicle at the VR4 ballistic protection level. The sedan offers an impressively striking and prestigious design, supreme handling, generous space and uncompromising premium quality. Superior driving dynamics is ensured by the 8-cylinder and 6-cylinder engines available for the security vehicle, the innovative lightweight construction with aluminium/steel body and all-aluminium chassis as well as sophisticated chassis systems such as Active Steering and the roll stabilisation function Dynamic Drive. What is more, fittings such as the operating concept iDrive, BMW Night Vision and Adaptive Headlight including turning light and variable light distribution emphasise the outstanding status of the BMW 5-Series.

8-cylinder and 6-cylinder engines to choose from: supreme power at two output levels.

The BMW 5-Series Security is offered in two model versions, both of which have identical security features. The BMW 550i Security is powered by a 4.8- litre 8-cylinder engine which offers top-class refinement, supreme power delivery across a wide engine speed range and exemplary efficiency. The V8 engine, with the throttle-free valve control system VALVETRONIC, variable camshaft control Double VANOS for the intake and outlet side and an intake system which operates at two levels, delivers 270 kW/367 bhp and achieves a maximum torque of 490 Nm.

In the BMW 530i Security there is a 3.0 litre inline 6-cylinder engine with a magnesium-aluminium compound crankcase which has an output of 200 kW/272 bhp and a maximum torque of 315 Nm. In the security model, too, it impressively brings out the qualities which are characteristic of BMW 6- cylinder engines - dynamic power delivery, high revving power and exemplary running smoothness. Both model versions boast supreme driving performance figures in everyday traffic and also have extensive power reserves which allow the driver to escape dangerous situations by means of a swift response. Both the BMW 550i Security and the BMW 530i Security are fitted as standard with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The BMW 550i Security reaches a speed of 100 km/h from standing in just 6.5 seconds. The corresponding acceleration rate of the BMW 530i Security is 6.5 seconds. Both models have an electronically cut-off top speed of 240 km/h.

Extensive protection against criminal attacks.

With its security vehicles, BMW responds to increasing violence and criminal threats ("carjacking", kidnapping) in numerous regions of the world. This includes Latin America, parts of South-East Asia and the Middle East and some states of the former Soviet Union. The criminal acts in question are frequently random in nature and generally speaking are not directed at the passengers themselves but are committed with the intention of stealing valuables or the vehicle itself. The BMW 5-Series Security is excellently equipped to fend off such attacks since the entire passenger cell is bulletresistant and its armour fulfils the requirements of ballistic protection level VR4. This means that the BMW 5-Series Security can resist attacks with impact weapons as well as hand weapons and handguns up to a calibre of .44 Magnum including .357 Magnum or 9 mm Luger. The appropriate certification is provided by the German ballistic authority Beschussamt Mellrichstadt based on the norm for bullet-resistant vehicles, BRV 1999. At the request of BMW, the ballistic testing goes far beyond the usual requirements. In addition to the stipulated firing angles of 90° and 45°, the tests include other firing angles in order to make them more realistic, with the relevant certification being provided.

The highly effective protection of the BMW 5-Series Security derives from its integrated protective systems which are installed by hand with painstaking care by highly qualified experts at a special plant in Toluca (Mexico). A precisely defined combination of casings, moulded parts and panels is used to armour the vehicle. These are largely made of materials which are bulletresistant but nonetheless of low weight. At critical points such as the gaps and borders of the synthetic fibre mats, rust-proof chrome-nickel steel is used. This provides optimum all-round protection for the passenger cell. On request, a shatter protection element can be integrated in the underbody.

In order to ensure seamless protection and still preserve a lower weight, highquality and extremely carefully finished fibre mats are used for the armourplating of the BMW 5-Series Security. Aramid mats are thus used for the roof and the body columns and for the front wall to the footwell and the back wall to the luggage compartment. This material is the same as that used for bulletproof police vests. Not only is it bullet-resistant, it also resilient to heat, fire and acid. The protective mats in the areas of the doors are made of the even lighter and equally bullet-proof material polyethylene, which absorbs the impact energy of a projectile especially well due to its structure. Chrome-nickel steel is used for bordering the protective mats, sealing the gaps in the door sections and reinforcing window edges.

The security glazing of the BMW 5-Series Security consists of a 22 mm thick compound of plastic and glass. The multi-layered glass is also bullet-resistant according to VR4 ballistic protection levels and is resilient to attack by impact weapons. The window panes also have a polycarbonate coating which provides shatter protection for the vehicle interior.

In contrast to retrofitted armour plating, which frequently leaves security gaps and leads to excessive weight strain on vehicle parts, the integrated protection concept for BMW Security Vehicles covers all potential weak points. This includes body joints, door gaps and the transitions between metal and glass. Due to the model-specific conception of the protective features, which also includes gap sealing, care is taken to ensure that neither projectiles nor shattered glass can penetrate into the interior of the vehicle at critical points.

Low additional weight, unconstrained comfort, inconspicuous exterior.

In spite of the extensive security features, the generous interior of the BMW 5-Series Security is preserved virtually without limitation due to the intelligent space concept, with almost the entire range of extensive comfort features still available. The additional weight does not impair the dynamic character of the BMW 5-Series and the security vehicles thus provide the sporty feel which is characteristic of BMW. The additional weight as compared to the corresponding serial production vehicles is just 250 kg. This is significantly less than that of comparable security vehicles produced by competitors in the premium segment.

From the outside, the BMW 5-Series Security is virtually indistinguishable from its serial production counterpart, since many customers attach great importance to discretion and anonymity.

Active safety and top-level handling.

The chassis of the BMW 5-Series Security is perfectly adapted to the additional weight. For this purpose, specific chassis components such as springs and dampers are fitted, as well as a particularly high-performance brake system. The electronics box in the engine compartment is protected by means of aramid panels so as to ensure it continues to function even in extreme situations. The BMW 5-Series Security also has tyres with emergency running properties. This means that the tyres remain operational even in the event of a complete loss of pressure - for example after being fired at or when driven over sharp objects. Even with a full load, these tyres enable the vehicle to be driven for a further distance of some 50 kilometres at a speed of up to 80 km/h.

Perfect handling in demanding driving situations is ensured by the innovative chassis technology of the BMW 5-Series. The driver of a BMW security vehicle also benefits from this in extreme conditions. In the BMW 5-Series Security, as in the serial production models of the BMW 5-Series, the driving dynamics regulation system Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) is fitted, offering a wide range of functions. DSC suppresses both oversteering and understeering in difficult situations on the road. The system also includes a so called anti-fading support: any decrease in brake power at extremely high temperatures is set off by increasing brake forces accordingly. Moderate build-up of brake forces also enhances brake standby in situations which may require spontaneous deceleration. Regular dry braking optimizes performance of the brakes in the wet, while the start-off assistant facilitates the process of setting off on an uphill gradient.

The DSC system also includes the special mode Dynamic Traction Control (DTC). Activated by pressing a button, this mode raises the response thresholds for driving stability regulation and thus makes it easier to set off on snow or loose sand, for example. DTC also enables the driver to take bends in a highly sporty style.

The chassis system Dynamic Drive also reduces roll movements of the BMW 5-Series Security on bends to a minimum. In this way, both agility and comfort is increased at all speed ranges, as well as providing optimum selfsteering and load alteration response. The optional feature Active Steering is also available: this varies steering transmission in relation to road speed. At low speeds, Active Steering enables the vehicle to be manoeuvred into a parking space with very little movement of the steering wheel, for example, while at high speeds a more indirect steering response optimises drive stability.

Optimum visibility: Xenon headlamps, BMW Night Vision and camera systems.

The BMW 5-Series Security can be optionally fitted with xenon headlamps and Adaptive Headlight. This ensures that curves in the road are illuminated accordingly. The swivel direction of the headlamps is derived from the position of the steering wheel, the yaw rate and the speed of the vehicle. This feature also includes the turning light function, which adapts the direction of illumination at speeds of less than 40 km/h.

What is more, visibility on straight stretches of road is optimised by the new variable light distribution function. This innovative control system, which like the turning light is part of the special equipment feature Adaptive Headlight, automatically enlarges the field of vision by specifically expanding the light cone in relation to the road speed. In urban light mode at speeds under 50 km/h, identification of objects on the left-hand side of the road is facilitated by means of a wider light distribution, for example. In motorway light mode, the field of vision is expanded by an elongation of the light cone and a more intensive illumination of the area to the left. As soon as the driver activates the fog lamps in addition, the variable light distribution function applies a wider light distribution in the speed range up to 70 km/h, as well as brightening the area close to the vehicle. At higher speeds, both the breadth and range of the light is increased.

An even higher degree of safety for nocturnal driving is provided by the optionally available system BMW Night Vision. The core of this system is a thermal image camera which detects people, animals and objects at the edge of the road at a distance of 300 metres and transmits a contrasting image to the central Control Display which is also used by the navigation system. In this way, the driver's attention is drawn to possible dangers which cannot be identified with the naked eye.

An additional option for the BMW 5-Series Security is a rear view camera. This video system facilitates parking and manoeuvring in spaces where this limited room or poor visibility. The high-resolution images of the rear view camera with wide-angle lens are displayed by the system in colour and with optimised perspective on the Control Display. Interactive track lines also indicate to the driver the optimum steering angle and tightest possible turning circle. Early detection of dangerous situations ahead of the vehicle is facilitated by the innovative system Side View. It operates using two cameras integrated in the front wheel arches which allow early observation of sideon traffic. The images from these cameras are transferred to the Control Display and not only offer an additional convenience when manoeuvring the vehicle but also provide an advance view of what is happening to the left and right of the vehicle when exiting driveways with limited space or poor visibility or when driving out of a multi-storey car park.

Security technology off the production line: Intercom system and alarm system.

The BMW 5-Series Security is fitted with an intercom system and an attack alarm. This means that it is possible to hold conversations with people outside the vehicle without having to open doors and windows. When the attack alarm is triggered, windows and doors are automatically locked, and both acoustic and visual alarm signals are set off.

The standard range of equipment also includes sun blinds for the rear and side windows which obstruct the view into the passenger area, as well as two side airbags at the rear. At the front, the BMW 5-Series Security is fitted with front, pelvis and thorax airbags as well as curtain airbags at the side.

Virtually all the other comfort options available for the BMW 5-Series are likewise available for the BMW 5-Series Security. In addition, individual wishes can be taken into account which go beyond the special equipment program and the integrated protection features. In this way, the sedan combines the outstandingly high level of security ensured by the integrated protective features with extensive individualisation options.

BMW 535i Review

front-3.jpgBack in the day, BMW didn't exactly pander to its customers. We build, you buy. Life is life. As BMW's fortunes and model lines expanded, options appeared. But the German carmaker never quite outgrew its arrogance stubborn streak. You want a 7-Series without iDrive? Not possible. Don't like run-flats on your 3-Series? Go and buy what tires you like. Use the word "vagina" in a review? No press cars for you Schätze. Thankfully, you can circumvent the iDrive in the new 535i and run flats are now optional. Is this the harbinger of a kindler, gentler 5-Series?
